Bowl of Citrons

This is homework for my painting class taught by Jody Joseph. I had to choose a famous still life and then flatten it to make it look almost like a stain glass window. I chose the piece Still Life with Bowl of Citrons by Giovanna Garzoni.

I had a lot of fun with this piece.  It required me to really stretch my brain, use my instincts and design sense (more then usual). I was trying to channel Picasso while I was creating this. I wonder what Jody will say about it. I hope I understood the homework correctly but even if I did not, I feel that this piece has helped me grow as an artist.

This was created with a Wacom Bamboo Graphics Tablet and a program called GIMP 2.

Please email me if you are interested in purchasing this piece. Thank you.

Guess Who

For my painting class (taught by Jody Joseph) I painted this self portrait directly from observation using a mirror. I am pleased with how it turned out. I have never been so successful with a self portrait until this one.

As usual, any comments, or suggestions are greatly appreciated. :)

Orchid Painting 1

This is my first painting of the orchid that my friend game me. :) It was done with acrylic and it is (in my opinion) loose and fun. I guess that I have yet to discover how to be super loose with digital painting.  This was painted during my class with the incredible Laurie Wonfor Nolan.

Rainbow Tree

In my painting class we were studying Fauvism. For homework, I decided to paint a tree at the back of my complex.  I then added strong colours to the painting while maintaining the correct values. The sun was just setting, it was about 3 degrees Celsius and man did I ever have fun with this. My painting teacher Jody Joseph mentioned that this piece was almost a self portrait. I kinda agree with her. It is cool how that can happen sometimes.

Rudiments

This simple egg was an exercise to help me understand that the simpler the object being painted, the more difficult it can be to create a good composition. I had a difficult time with this one, but I like the subtle pinks, yellows, and blues, so I decided to post it anyway.

Columbia Lake Optically Mixed

This piece was a lot of fun. My painting buddy Anne and I, were at Columbia Lake (in Waterloo, Ontario) doing some plein air painting and wow was it cold! It was 1 degree Celsius, foggy and a bit gloomy but we still had a great time and were able to come home with decent paintings. We even met some fellow artists who were photographers!

It was very different to paint in such cold temperatures. The acrylic paint acts more like oil paint because it does not dry.

Back Lit Orchid

Although today is Friday the 13th, it has been a very lucky day for me. My computer died yesterday which meant that since this painting was created with my computer, the painting would have been lost (because I had not backed up the file). But I was able to repair my computer and finish my digital painting! I felt so happy! I also learned to back up all my computer artwork from now on (I seriously did not think to do it until my computer died).

I was really taken by how different the orchid flowers looked when they were lit from the back instead of the front. You could not even see the delicate little yellow bits of the flower because they appeared almost purple instead.

This was created with a Wacom Bamboo Graphics Tablet and a program called GIMP 2.

Elapsed

In my Modern Masters painting class (at the Dundas Valley School of Art) we are studying a genre of artwork called memento mori. The purpose of this genre is to remind us of our mortality.

Although this is a very morbid genre, I painted this piece with a rather bright and warm feel because let's face it, we cannot have life without death. And life is a warm, bright and wonderful thing!

This is a very deep and personal piece to me. The book is actually my great grandmother's bible. She wrote out the names of each family member who died in that bible. The egg was painted by my deceased grandmother. It is a symbol of life but at the same time the egg is boiled and dead. The pearls represent my grandmother on my mother's side. She is getting very old now but is still so beautiful. The rings represent life commitment and love. But the rings are also a worldly object which will be left behind when we die. In the background is a broken violin who's playing days are over (or at least until someone decides to fix it).

This was created with an iPad, a program called Brushes iPad edition, and a Nomad brush.

I would like to thank my Mom very much for lending me all the objects in this piece and for being awesome!

Thanks for reading this and cheers!

On a side note, this song was playing in my head the entire time that I was painting this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X2fdGEWOhA

Flirty Orchid

This Orchid is perhaps one of the nicest gifts I have ever received. An artist friend gave this to me for my birthday (I could tell that she was very careful with which Orchid she chose) and asked that I paint it so that I would always have it. This is the result. Cool eh?

This Orchid was sitting on my table and looked to me like it was giggling about something in almost a flirty kind of way. I just had to paint it!

A Poinsettia for my Mom

I painted my Mom's poinsettia plant so that no matter what she would always have it. :)

This is also one of my first paintings which involved mostly reds and wow was it difficult! I don't think that I got the values correct and I know that there is not enough variety in the reds. I am also not sure if including the leaf veins did this painting any good. Oh well, it is still good to push myself and then move on. I like the almost watercolor affect that I was able to achieve with the Nomad brush and transparent colours.

Huron Park Natural Area

The day that this was painted was not a good day for me. So my husband took me to my favorite park, and read a book while I painted. Wow did painting there ever lift my spirits. My husband knows me well. :)

The sun was just setting, it was serene and beautiful.

Be Kind Little Lady

First I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year full of love, light and happiness!

I chose to post this piece today because it shows how far I have come in my art abilities since 2010. This was painted using only the primaries (Prussian Blue, Napthol Red Light and Hansa Yellow Medium). Also, for whatever reason, this beautiful statue tends to be very difficult to paint. I was very pleased to be able to successfully paint it. I really look forward to seeing how much further my artistic abilities will develop in 2012!

Value Still Life

I was practicing values using purple, prussian blue and white paint (instead of black and white paint) because I don't own black paint! :P

I really like the final result.
